Construction to Begin on Southern Access Extension Pipeline Project

Construction of the Southern Access Extension (SAX) Pipeline Project will begin on June 16, 2015. Crews from Illinois Extension Pipeline Company, L.L.C. (IEPC) have been preparing the right-of-way since last fall, and the company is now ready to start construction. The current schedule has pipeline construction ending in mid-November, with the pipeline going into service in December 2015.

The SAX Pipeline Project is a 168-mile, 24-inch outside diameter crude oil pipeline spanning from Enbridge’s Flanagan terminal near Pontiac, Ill. to an existing petroleum terminal hub near Patoka, Ill. The pipeline route crosses eights counties: Livingston, McLean, DeWitt, Macon, Christian, Shelby, Fayette, and Marion. The route generally parallels existing pipeline and electric transmission right-of-ways. In addition to the new pipeline, new pump stations are being constructed at the Flanagan Terminal and near Decatur. The total capital investment in the Project is more than $800 million. Approximately one thousand workers will be involved in construction of the 300,000 barrel-per-day pipeline.

IEPC’s highest priority during construction is safety. This summer’s construction will bring hundreds of temporary workers to communities along the pipeline route. That means economic benefits to these communities. It also means more traffic, more people, and heavy equipment in the area. Please use caution when driving near construction sites. The public is urged to watch for flaggers and caution signs and to be prepared for slow traffic.

The SAX Pipeline Project is owned by IEPC, a joint venture of Enbridge affiliate, Enbridge Energy Company, Inc. and Lincoln Pipeline, L.L.C., a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum Corporation.
